January-April
- South American and Caribbean
protocol workshop was held in Caracas Venezuela in January.
- The 2006 field season has started for the European seas Drs
Lisandro Beneditti-Cecchi and Iacaopo Bertocci sampled the Calafuria site on the coast of
Italy in March and hosted an all EU Seas NaGISA workshop in April. The
European Region has expanded to include an initiative in Crete, Greece
lead by Dr. Chirstos Avanitidis and Prof. A. Eleftheriou from the
Institute of Marine Biology and Genetics (IMBG/HCMR), new map of the EU region.

May-August
- Announcement of the History of the Nearshore
Program Open Call for Proposals.
- The Indian Ocean Region had its first regional
meeting and protocol workshop in Mombassa Kenya in June.
- WPac NaGISA has hired an interim
secretary Ms. Tanaka to assist Dr. Shirayama
with the activities of the western Pacific region and help out with the
growing workload of international headquarters. WestPac and has kicked
off this years community activities by having the local high school
participate in a joint sampling initiative in Kisennuma
Sendai Japan.
- NaGISA newsletter vol. 2 was published.

September-December
- Experimental design and data analysis course entitled 'Detecting
changes in biodiversity' was held in Pisa Italy.
- NaGISA held its first scientific symposium in Kobe Japan October
15-18, 2006. The conference had three primary goals: To facilitate the
interaction of nearshore benthic ecologists and taxonomists; To
strengthen the connection between NaGISA and complementary projects; To
present research and results from the NaGISA project. Reports and Comments from NaGISA First
World Congress. The 4th NaGISA SSG Meeting was held
afterwards.
- The History of the Near Shore - a joint initiative between
NaGISA and HMAP (Historical Marine Animal Populations) is attempting to
identify specific local sites on which historical (pre 1980) records of
biodiversity are available and to resample them under the auspices of
the NaGISA project. An open call for proposals has been issued and all
interested parties are encouraged to contact HNS
directly.
- The Marine Gastropoda and
Polyplacophora workshop was held in Jakarta, Indonesia.
