Calendar of Past Events 2004

by Robin last modified 2007-12-05 02:17
  • January-April

    • On April 1st Dr. Robin Rigby moved from being the volunteer outreach and education officer to an official post doc position with NaGISA.. The new position is based out of Seto Marine Biological Laboratory and evolves taking care of the relationships between the ever-growing multitude of partners and interested parties.
    • On April 2nd Dr. Kato introduced NaGISA to the European Communities at a workshop of the European Union funded project MARBENA (dealing with large scale European Coastal Marine Biodiversity, headed by prof. Carlo Heip from Yerseke, Netherlands hosted by Dr. Jan Marcin Weslawski) in Gdansk, Poland. We are hoping that the presentation results in a European branch of NaGISA.
    • April 6th was the first time NaGISA style transects were run in the Gulf of Mexico. The high school students of Niceville High organized by their teacher Richard Hernandez were able to get in the water with the help of an amazing number of people. It was a wonderful example of a remote project (i.e. in not run directly by us but by the students themselves) and we look forward to other schools being able to have the same experience (of course it all depends on getting great teachers involved!).
    • April 8th will see the start of Western Pacific NaGISA (formally know and the Japan Center) 2004 sampling. They will start with the Seto area.
    • Eastern Pacific NaGISA (formally known as the Alaska center) is about to start their second year of sampling! NaGIGA PI`s Dr. Brenda Konar and Dr. Katrin Iken of the University of Alaska (Fairbanks) will be in Sample Port Graham, Alaska with the local community on the 19-20 of April.
    • NaGISA Thailand has gone through some changes in the last couple months that have resulted in the upcoming move of the Thai Sorting Center from the Phuket Marine Biological Station to Kasetsart University, Bangkok. With the move we have lost a number of good para-taxonomists and to the lovely island atmosphere, but look forward to the challenge of training more technicians in the new academic setting that will be run by Dr. Chittima Aryuthaka under the auspices of the Dean of the Faculty of Fisheries Dr. Yont Musig. see the report of the opening here.
    • The NaGISA Protocol presentation is now available you can see it here or download (PDF 11.0 MB) .
    • The first organizational meeting of Eastern Pacific NaGISA was hosted by Dr. Matt Edwards (NaGISA`s California and Baja investigator) in the University of San Diego on the 16-18 of April.
    • NaGISA Vietnam sampled Luzon (Bolinao) and Visayas (Iloilo) on the 20-29 of April.
