The Indian Ocean (IO)
Overseen by Dr. Edward Kimani (Kenya Marine and Fisheries Research Institute) the IO Center began in 2006. Initial discussions with researchers at Indian Ocean Marine Environmental Conference and Western Indian Ocean Marine Science Association have lead the regional group to outline a) human impacts - land/ocean interactions; b) resource use and c) invasive species as focus points for inter-regional collaboration beyond the general mandate of a long term census of regional biodiversity. The first regional meeting took place in Mombassa in April 2006 along with a Protocol Workshop that was open to regional researchers. NaGISA sampling has already started in South Africa and Kenya and local research groups are currently organizing involvement at the other sites in the map below. Interested parties are invited to download the IO NaGISA Regional Brochure and address any questions or enquires to Dr. Kimani directly or express interest through NaGISA headquarters.
